Welcome to the Florida Agriculture Best Management Practice Blog (FABB)!!!

We are excited that you have located our site and hope that you find it useful.

FABB is a web board (or BLOG) that was created as part of a USDA-CSREES grant

FABB will be used to post information that is relevant to this project and/or to agricultural producers in South Florida. As the project progresses, new postings will be added to FABB.

Topics that you might see in the future on this BLOG include: soil moisture based irrigation, nutrient management, BMPs, economic considerations for agriculture, and other exciting topics.

We also hope to have cameo articles from local producers.  If you have something to share or know someone who does, please let us know!

We welcome comments on FABB.  All comments are screened  before posting. Although posts are anonymous, please include your title and occupation for research purposes. If you have any concerns about posting on our BLOG please contact Kati Migliaccio or Tina Dispenza.

Water Quality and Quantity Initial Survey

The University of Florida Tropical Research and Education Center is conducting a survey to collect information on water related issues from the local community.  Specifically, the water issues to be covered are associated with water quantity and water quality management practices.

Water quantity management practices refer to practices that are put into place so that water is used more efficiently, which often times results in lower water volumes used overall.  Water quality management practices refer to practices that are put into place so that fewer agrichemicals enter water systems (examples of water systems: groundwater, streams, canals, estuaries).

This survey is the first in a series of two intended to track changing views of local agricultural residents over the next three years toward water quantity and quality issues.  Results from this survey will provide us with information to better serve the agricultural community of south Florida.

Nursery Cost Share Funds Available

This week, nursery growers can begin to apply for cost share funds available from FDACS at the USDA Service Center in Florida City, beginning February 15 and running through March 1.

The Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services has made limited funds available for up to 80% cost share on approved practices for container nurseries.  While this does not cover hurricane damage per se, each owner should schedule an appointment with the Nursery Lab staff headed by Michelle Codallo, with support from Don Grimsley, at (305) 242-1288.  Construction costs, including material and labor, may be covered.  Each site must be individually evaluated by the Nursery Lab staff prior to turning in an application.

After applications have been accepted, the Selection Committee will review them, and growers will be notified as to whether or not they have qualified.  Successful applicants will be asked to sign a “Notice of Intent to Implement” FDACS form, in which they agree to implement guidelines outlined in the Nursery BMP Guide. A copy of the Guide is available on-line  or in the office of the South Dade Soil & Water Conservation District, 1450 N. Krome Ave., Suite 104, Florida City, Florida (the USDA Service Center).

Two New EDIS Publications are Available!

Migliaccio, K. W. and B. J. Boman. 2006. Total Maximum Daily Loads and Agricultural BMPs in Florida. EDIS publication ABE 362

This publication addresses many issues regarding Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) and Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the state of Florida.  Our focus was on agriculture and the processes that are currently in place (or being developed) to guide BMP implementation.  This publication provides basic information on the process and resources for those who would like a more in depth review.

Migliaccio, K. W., Y. C. Li, H. Trafford, and E. Evans. 2006. A simple lysimeter for soil water sampling in south Florida. EDIS publication ABE 361

This publication details one of the lysimeter designs being used in our USDA-CSREES project in Biscayne Bay Watershed.  This design is simple and relatively inexpensive.  The publication is meant to provide understanding on how researchers measure leaching of agrochemicals and as an example for others conducting similar experiments.

Southeast Climate Consortium (SECC)

The Southeast Climate Consortium (SECC) is a multi-state effort including many different institutions: Florida State University, University of Florida, University of Miami, University of Georgia, Auburn University, and University of Alabama-Huntsville.

The SECC provides a service called ‘AgClimate.’  AgClimate is a Website that provides information on the latest climate forecasts.  In addition, the website provides historic information on rainfall and temperature measurements by county.  Other interesting tools are available on the website to predict drought and crop yields.

AgClimate is a tool that is available for growers of different commodities so that they can include climate factors in their planning.  For more information or questions regarding the SECC or AgClimate, please contact Kati Migliaccio.
